Kids Play Clay Recipe

1 c salt
1/3 c water
1/2 c cornstarch
1/4 c cold water
food coloring (optional)

Mix salt and 1/3 c water over medium heat stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes.
Remove from heat; add cornstarch and cold water.
Add a few drops of food coloring if desired.
Mixture will resemble mashed potatoes.
Stir til it thickens, cool then knead on board or counter top.
Store unused clay in fridge in sealed container.

(Note: After I followed the instructions, it was still really runny... I cooked it a bit more and the consistency improved.)

Art Activities

Play Doh
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Tbl cooking oil
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • a few drops of liquid food coloring
Mix all but the last ingredient in a small saucepan.
Cook over a very low heat until it turns into a dough (it’ll take just a few minutes). Stir constantly, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the pan. Remove from heat.
Let cool in a bowl covered with a wet cloth for a minute.
Knead the dough on a floured surface until cool enough for kids to touch. Separate the dough into as many colors as you want to make. Put just a few drops of coloring in each ball and knead until evenly mixed.
Stir in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Slime
  • 2 cups white glue (such as Elmer's)  (use regular glue not washable, washable doesn't set up well)
  • 2 Cups Water
  • liguid food coloring
  • 1 tsp borax
Pour glue into a mixing bowl. Slowly add 1 1/2 cups of water and several drops of food coloring.
In another bowl, dissolve borax in 1/2 cup of water.
Add dissolved borax to glue mixture. Knead for 10 min, until slime separates between your fingers. Let slime condense in an airtight container overnight before using. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
Kneed slime to soften before each use.

HINT: If your slime solution seems too runny, just let it sit awhile. Come back and check in 20 or 30 minutes. You can always add more borax solution. If you add too much Borax however, and the solution feels gritty, just put the slime in a bowl or ziplock baggy with a small amount of extra water. Let it sit, then knead it a bit -- repeat this process until you have a smooth, more pliable, "clammy" feeling version of the slime.

Soap Crayons
  • 1 cup unscented soap flakes or a bar of soap, grated
  • 2 Tbs hot water (if using grated bar soap you did your self add 4 Tbs)
  • liquid food coloring
Mix soap and hot water in a plastic bowl, then divide into small bowls, one for each color. Add 12 drops of liquid food coloring to each bowl.
Stir mixture until it thickens and becomes hard to stir. Scoop up by the tablespoonful and roll in to thick log shapes. Let dry 1 to 2 days.
Short, thick crayons are sturdier than skinny ones.

Finger Paints
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 3 tsp sugar
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1 Tbs light corn syrup
  • 1/8 cup of liquid dish soap
  • liquid food coloring
  • small bowls or jars with lids
In a small pot, stir water, sugar, and cornstarch. Whisk over low heat for 5 minutes until mixture is thick and clear.
Stir in corn syrup and dish soap. Pour paint into small containers with lids.
Add a few drops of food coloring to each and shake until color is well mixed.
Use thick paper for finger painting- it holds up better.

Save up those TP rolls and wad up your socks.

Arrange TP rolls like bowling pins on one end of the hall.  Stock up a few balled-up socks on the other.  Bowl or throw at the “pins,” and you’ve got an indoor bowling alley.  There’s tons of other crafts you can do with toilet paper rolls, too.
